Vasai Fort
About
Fort Bassein / Vasai Fort Mumbai
Vasai Fort (also known as Bassein Fort) in Vasai, Palghar is a magnificent 16th-century Portuguese sea fort located just north of Mumbai. Built in 1534, it was once a powerful trading and military stronghold that controlled the Arabian Sea trade route before being captured by the Marathas in 1739.
What makes it special
Spread over a vast area with massive stone walls, bastions, and ruins, the fort showcases a beautiful blend of Portuguese and Indian architecture. Inside, you’ll find remnants of old churches (like St. Sebastian’s and Our Lady of Grace), watchtowers, gateways, and crumbling residential structures. The fort is surrounded by the sea on three sides, offering scenic views, especially during sunrise and sunset. Though not heavily maintained, its raw, historical charm and peaceful atmosphere make it a favourite for history lovers, photographers, and weekend explorers.
Things to do
- Explore the ruins, old churches, and massive stone walls on foot.
